The Town Council at its meeting held April 18th voted to create a new committee.

Section of draft Council minutes explaining the new Committee:

The Solicitor read several goals and actions from the Town’s Comprehensive Plan:

GOAL HC2. PRESERVE BUILDINGS AND SITES OF HISTORIC AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE ALONG WITH THE HISTORIC AND DOCUMENTARY RECORD OF THE COMMUNITY

Policy HC2.A. Collaborate with and support the efforts of the Little Compton Historical Society and other organizations that further historic preservation in the Town

Policy HC2.B. Promote the use of historic preservation easements and other voluntary measures to preserve sites of historic interest on private property

Actions
Action HC2.a. Establish a committee that will: maintain a list of historic and cultural assets in Town, work with RIHPHC to develop a list of properties within the Town that are potentially eligible for listing on the National Register, and encourage property owners to nominate qualified properties to the National Register

Action HC2.b. Provide information on programs available to property owners who seek to voluntarily protect historic sites

Action HC2.c. Explore the establishment of a voluntary Historic District and financial and other incentives to encourage property owners to opt-in.

Having cited these sections and noting he created the ordinance for the Warren Historic district he suggested the Council follow-up with the LC Historical Society to determine what they have and create a committee to develop a plan to allow all concerns of the Council and property owners to be considered.  This Committee should bring a plan before the Council for consideration.

Motion made by Councilor Golembeske, receiving a second by Councilor Mataronas, all in favor (Golembeske, Mataronas, McHugh, Mushen):  To establish a committee and solicit from the public for interested parties to serve on said committee, and to charge the committee with development of a plan per Actions designated in the Town Comprehensive Plan sections HC2.A to HC2 whereby said draft plan will be submitted to the Town Council for consideration of further steps.

TO EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST TO SERVE ON THIS NEW COMMITTEE PLEASE REACH OUT TO THE TOWN CLERK.  A letter of interest will be accepted through May 9, 2024 at 4 pm.
